Zobrist and Escobar became available for trade after the signing of Asdrubal Cabrera was reported earlier this week (finalized today). The A's likely want Zobrist because of his versatility and because he fits with the A's ideal batter, because he can get on base. In fact he is the Rays franchise leader in Walks at 542, and he is Second in hits at 1016. For these reasons the A's were willing to give up what it took to get him even if it included there best Catcher left after the trade of Dereck Norris earlier this winter. The A's could still acquire another Catcher before the season, but options are limited and if they can't it may become a weak spot on their roster come opening day.
