Melky Cabrera was the top free agent outfielder on the market. Melky is 30 years old, and is likely exiting his prime, but he can still hit for both power and contact. In 2014 he slashed .301/.351/.458 and earned a WAR of 3.1. He will join Adam Eaton in the White Sox outfield , who earned a miraculous 5.2 WAR while flying under most star radars. The White Sox are led by stars Jose Abreu, Adam Eaton, and their amazing rotation (Sale, Samardzija, Quintana etc.), the new acquisition of Melky Cabrera is a big boost, and although they still have a few holes, such as second baseman Carlos Sanchez, they look like possible contenders for 2015.
Ben Cherington has completely changed the Red Sox rotation in just a matter of hours. He has added Wade Miley, Rick Porcello, and Justin Masterson to the rotation that previously was just Joe Kelly, and Clay Buchholz. There is still no clear ace in the Red Sox rotation, and they have not ruled out one more pitching acquisition. Rick Porcello traded for Cespedes and moreThe Red Sox added Rick Porcello who could be considered their simply based on ability, but is only 25 and may not be best suited as the rotation's leader. When you look at this trade some may see a bad move for the Red Sox. Red Sox sign Justin MastersonThe Red Sox have also signed Justin Masterson. Masterson came up with the Red Sox before being traded to the Indians for Victor Martinez in 2009. He has had an up and down career since then, with streaks of brilliance as well as some bad years. The Red Sox have now signed him for one year and $9.5 million. Other addition to the Sox rotation is Wade Miley, acquired in a deal with the D-Backs.The Tigers have reached two deals reported Thursday, day four of the Winter meetings. One of them was with the Red Sox, who are sending Yoenis Cespedes for Rick Porcello, and the other with the Reds for Alfredo Simon in return for Eugenio Suarez and Jonathon Crawford. Alfredo Simon Joins Tigers Rotation
Dodgers busy in day three at winter meetingsWith three big trades it is hard to make sense of all the Dodgers did. Here's a diagram that should help. Andrew Heaney was on the Dodger's roster for less than 24 hours before he was sent for Howie Kendrick this morning. Heaney was a possible option as the Dodgers fifth starter. Without him on the roster anymore the Dodgers will still be searching for someone to fill the hole. Recent rumors have suggested that they may be looking to Brandon McCarthy to do just that.
