Ervin Santana and Francisco Liriano have both recently signed contract. Santana will join the Minnesota Twins on a four year $54 million dollar deal, a $13.5 million average per year. Francisco Liriano has a three year $39 million dollar deal a $13 million average. Both are similar righties with up and down careers and earned very similar dollar averages in the offseason. They are also very similar in age, so with all these similarities I made their projections together.
These two players have an unmistakably similar career path, however Ervin Santana who got 1 more year plus an option is actually worse. Santana will be earning $8.3 million per WAR point, and Liriano will be earning a substantially lower $7.2 million per WAR point. In conclusion although these deals look similar The Pirates are getting a better deal with Liriano. |
